Men Cry Too - Research

Modern men cry in public twice as often as their fathers. This was found by the authors of a new study among 2,000 people, initiated by Universal Channel.

Polls showed that middle-aged men cry in front of others an average of 14 times during their adult life. And the older generation of the stronger sex allowed themselves such manifestations in society on average only five times in their lives! The authors of the study believe that in the modern world, the social paradigm of perception of men who exhibit emotional vulnerability is changing. This behavior is no longer associated with "inappropriate". We are moving away from stereotypes, and the critical attitude towards men showing emotions (which was previously at odds with generally accepted norms) is weakening.

British people today cry not only more often, not only more openly, but also about more trivial things. Society today allows them not to save tears solely for extreme events, such as the death of a family member or the birth of a child. And when alone with them, men are ready to cry over trifles: 8 out of 10 British men reacted emotionally to dramatic television programs, films or sitcoms.

Psychologist Donna Dawson comments on the findings of the researchers: “Although modern society is more forgiving of tears in crowded places, in ourselves - in many of us! - there is still a fear that the witnesses of our sensitivity and weakness can make fun of the “crybaby” for the inability to contain emotion. " “Meanwhile, the fictional plots of various TV shows are more likely to cause our tears, since they are initially associated with the tool that is designed to give us“emotional relief”. Therefore, we can more openly express our emotion in its unclouded form. After all, complex life experiences are often tainted by conflicting feelings of guilt, regret, confusion and anger that accompany almost all specific situations in real life. It is the inconsistency of emotion that can stop ushinder the expression of sincere feelings, including through tears."
