The film by Joaquin Oristrell received the title "Kill Freud" only in the Russian box office. The original title "Inconscientes" says much more about the content and meaning of the picture. Its power and role in our life is clearly and very funny demonstrated by the filmmakers.
This comedy, which looks in one breath despite its intricate plot, is in fact a living illustration of the theory of psychoanalysis as applied to everyday life. Jealousy between sisters, the rivalry between son and father, the hidden meaning of dreams, the envy of women for the masculine principle, the bisexual nature of each person and the power of repressed feelings that affect our actions - all this the filmmakers managed to combine in an hour and a half picture. The genre of the film was a detective story: a journey into the world of one's own secret desires sometimes turns out to be no less exciting and dangerous than any other investigation.
Alma believes that the key to her husband's mysterious disappearance is his dissertation, which describes his work with four hysterical patients according to the newest method of Dr. Freud. With the help of El Salvador, she finds three of these women, along the way, revealing the secrets of her own family.
It turns out that Olivia, from childhood feeling like an unwanted child and suspecting that the father would prefer to have a son, eventually grows up to be a lesbian. This explains her tightness in the intimate sphere. Olivia's marriage to El Salvador is just a cover for "socially disapproved" same-sex love, as well as a desire to be no worse than her sister, who has always been popular with men. Olivia and Alma's communication is a typical sisters relationship, where love is closely intertwined with rivalry and jealousy. Only when Olivia decides to openly confess to her father that she felt unloved, and then sincerely talk to her sister, jealousy fades into the background and each of the girls begins to live her own life.
In general, the entire investigation of the main characters, sometimes leading them to completely unpredictable places, is a symbolic study of the darkest nooks of the human soul. Here there is a subconscious desire for the death of one's neighbor, and incest, and simply a suppressed sexual desire. Not everyone can withstand the burden of this knowledge. No wonder the fugitive spouse of Alma intends to kill Freud, who revealed so many secrets to people about themselves. “This man will destroy the world as we know it,” says Leon horrified. "Someone has to stop him."
In the finale, the lovers are reunited, and the theory of psychoanalysis begins its triumphant march through the world, which, indeed, will never be the same again.
